The summer is in full effect and here in the South most people enjoy relaxing on the porch. Just thinking back to the days when I spent my summer at my Grandmother's house brought back great memories. My cousins and I would spend hours with our toys and playing games on the porch. I loved the time spent drinking lemonade and sitting on the porch swing. Almost everyone had a front or back porch. Many stories of the "ole days" were shared by my relatives as the sunset. This is why I believe there is great sentimental value in having a porch. Porches create close bonds among neighbors and a sense of community. There are many types of porches and they vary according to region and by house type. There are many names used to describe types of porches. They include loggia, portico, balcony, deck, patio, sun room, lanai, veranda, piazza, stoop, or pavilion. Porch styles are very flexible with design. The design type can be contemporary, traditional or country. They also can be enclosed, screened, or open. Porches are very inviting and have lots of curb appeal. It is also a wonderful opportunity to display outdoor furniture and creative landscaping.
